Vild NaturkreaAn illustrative journey: exploring nature through play

Layout, illustration, and art direction for “Vild Naturkrea” (Creativity in Wild Nature), a book by Clorofille, a Danish charity that creates nature- and science-based educational experiences to engage young people and children. Clorofille believes that nature is a foundation for quality education and lifelong learning. The book, distributed to primary school teachers, features 40 activities for children aged 7 to 10. Each activity uses wild plants to foster and promote biodiversity conservation.

Design and strategy

One of the main challenges was to create something accessible and useful for both primary school teachers and children, the key target audiences. The aim is for teachers to draw inspiration from the book’s activities and share them effectively with their pupils. The design features an inclusive graphic language tailored to both target groups: the cover and introductory pages have detailed, elaborate illustrations, while the activities adopt a simple yet engaging infographic style to help children easily understand the content. A source of inspiration was the work of Marie and Otto Neurath on children's books. They believed that children learn best through visuals that encourage them to make comparisons and figure things out independently. In these books, complex scientific and technological information was transformed into beautiful, meaningful illustrations combined with words.
