CosbiA new visual vocabulary for Trento's biology research centre

COSBI is a systems biology research centre with over 15 years of experience that focuses on developing computational tools and applying them to systems pharmacology and systems nutrition. Founded in 2005 by Microsoft Research and the University of Trento, COSBI collaborates with academic institutions, research centres, and companies in the pharma, food, and biotech industries.
The research centre is known for its comprehensive computational pipeline which extracts knowledge from previous research and data case studies, identifies biological markers and creates mathematical models to predict the behaviour of complex biological processes.

Design and strategy

To make COSBI's work approach more accessible, the new website employs an infographic and illustrative design. Each part of the pipeline (COSBI’s expertise - knowledge extraction, data integration, biomarker identification, network/pathway analysis, and modeling and simulation) is visually represented with icons that help explain the stages of their process in a modern and approachable way. The style of the icons is inspired by COSBI’s graphical conceptual schemes that describe biological systems and their connections.

The new visual system revolves around this set of icons, used both individually and in compositions to represent their main research areas: pharmacology and nutrition.

The project involved creating a brand toolkit with updated design elements, including a secondary colour palette, typography, illustration styles, icons, and layout guidelines for digital use. Various short animations and icon compositions were developed for the website and a digital brand guideline was created to ensure consistent application of the new visual system.
